The Arizona State Legislature (Republican majority) passed a law that would allow business owners to refuse to provide service to gay and lesbian customers based on their religious beliefs. So this pizza shop put this sign in their store window refusing to serve Arizona legislators. The bill goes to Gov. Brewer for her signature next week. I doubt the law can stand up to higher court scrutiny. Pretty Sad. 

Welcome to the world my grandson, Jonah Miles Ferguson. Born this morning in Huntsville, Al. he weighs in at 7 lbs 12 oz. Mom and Dad are doing great.

Had a great time in Las Vegas.  We ate good, drank a little, and slept in.  We even had a little luck and come home with more money that we took, which is very unusual for us.

What an imagination. I would have never thought of something like this. It looks rather simple. Although as I look around my house, it wouldn't fit on many of the doors as there isn't the space next to the door for it fold into. But still quite ingenious I think.

Fifty years ago today The Beatles arrived in the United States at JFK Airport.  My favorite Beatle was Paul at the time.  "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" were already hits on the singles charts. They could be heard on am radio stations KHJ, KFWB, and KRLA.

A lot of people watch the Superbowl game for the commercials. I liked the Radio Shack one with all the '80 stars running around and the one with the military guy that came home to a small town with a parade etc. The Coca Cola commercial, shown below, stirred up quite a controversy.

Seems many were mad that such an "American" (can you say "white Christian" boys and girls) song should be sung by minorities in languages other than English (you know - "American talk")  Some were upset that the commercial showed two gay guys holding hands, truly unamerican!!  Then we learn that the writer of "America the Beautiful" church organist Katherine Lee Bates was a Lesbian and involved in a 25-year relationship Katherine Coman.  Yet there are those who would try to tell you that racial and sexual hatred and discrimination is long gone in America.  I think not.

The flu bug hit our house over the weekend. Corey starting throwing up Sunday morning and couldn't keep anything in his stomach. He ended up in the ER Sunday afternoon with the shakes, an elevated heart rate and dehydration.  They put him on an IV  and ran a couple of tests before sending him home later that evening. By Monday afternoon he was eating left over pizza.  Tuesday morning Josh woke up sick with cramps and throwing up etc.  By this morning he is felling better and heading off to work.

It seems to be a pretty strong bug for 24 hours.  So far Karen and I have been spared.  Could be that Josh and Corey share the same bathroom and it spread there.  Last night Karen went over the entire bathroom with Lysol spray.  I hope none of you have had it.

More on the Superbowl -

I watched the game on Sunday.  I thought it would never get here.  There were hours of "pre-game" shows and then a "pre-kick" show with former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath in a huge fur coat.  I had the number "7" in a Superbowl pool and that went out the window in the first few seconds of the game when the Denver center hiked the ball over Manning's head.

I have to say I was happy with the outcome.  I don't much care for the way Manning dances around before starting the play.  Call a play and hike the ball I say.  Our local Colony H.S. had two former players in the game, Seattle linebacker Bobby Wagner and Denver safety Omar Bolden.  An article in the SGV Tribune last week said that the two athletes are friends and live together in the off-season. 

Happens to me all the time.  When I worked at WCPD my office was downstairs.  I would walk to the top of the stairs and forget where I was going.  Things are better... what was my point??

A relatively quiet week, with just under 40 entries. It's happened before, but not very often. Despite the relative calm (at least in reported events), there were some truly remarkable accidents last week, including two tragic "thought there was an intruder" shootings that killed three people.

Thirteen kids were among last week's GunFAIL victims, including five between the ages of 11 and 17 accidentally shot in a single incident in Milwaukee. The youngest victim of the week was one described only as a baby, accidentally shot to death by her father, as he sat on the couch with the rifle he'd just bought hours before.

In the less spectacular categories, 15 people accidentally shot themselves, four gun owners accidentally fired into their neighbors' homes (including one loaded gun cleaner in St. Mary's, WV, who accidentally shot his 15-year-old neighbor in the head that way), two police officers accidentally discharged their weapons while on duty, two gun owners practicing at the range were accidentally shot, two were shot in hunting accidents, and two accidentally fired guns they were cleaning, apparently while they were still loaded. In keeping with the theme, two people committing suicide with their guns accidentally shot or nearly shot people nearby with the same bullet. In one incident in Morgantown, WV, a young man shot himself to death at home, sending the bullet upstairs through the ceiling, and into the ankle of his father, Tony Barill, a state representative from, yes, West Virginia. A very rough week in West Virginia.

Billy Standley of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, died of lung cancer at 82. As per his wishes, Billy was buried astride his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycle encased in a see-through casket. Billy had to buy an extra large plot to accommodate the casket and it took five embalmers to prepare the body.  His daughter Dorothy Brown described her father as "a quirky man."  I think that's an understatement.
