At midnight, September 20, 2011, the repeal of the policy referred to as "Don't Ask - Don't Tell" (DADT) took effect.  DADT of course is the policy in the military that made gay and lesbian service members hide their sexual orientation. 

At 12:01 AM in Vermont, Ma,. an active duty Navy Lieutenant married his partner of eleven years, which means for the past eleven years, this Navy lieutenant has been knowingly violating military police that prohibited homosexual activity. 

What a great step in the direction of equal rights to all in this country. Let's hope that the right to marry for all will follow in every state in the U.S.

Cool Tree

This is the Angel Oak Tree in Charleston, S.C. It is estimated to be over 1,500 years old. This tree is approx. 25' in circumference and stands at a height of 65'.  This second photo gives you an idea of it's height.  Pretty cool!!!  Looks like a great tree climbing tree!!!  I wonder if my friend Anne Gray has been to see this???

Elizabeth Warran, Democratic Senate candidate in Massachusetts and former White House financial reform advisor talking about taxing the rich, said it best I think;

“You built a factory out there? Good for you. But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.

“Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”

(Me now) Everyone is talking about sharing the load when it comes to taxes and yet the Republicans continue to fight tooth and nail against raising the taxes on the rich.  They (the rich) need the money to create more jobs.  But the rich have had the Bush tax breaks for ten years and where are all the jobs to show for it??  It doesn't do any good to have big companies making lots of "stuff" if there is no one to but their "stuff."

Ouch!!!

The Western Georgia town of Carrollton, population 23,421, has decided to ban the performance of the "Rocky Horror Picture Show."  Mayor Wayne Garner called the show "offensive" and "not keeping with the community of Carrollton." 

The play was to premiere on October 27, until a cast member posted a video from a dance rehearsal on his Facebook page, and someone showed it to the mayor.  Mayor Garner said, "if that play was allowed to proceed, we'd be run out of town."  The city apparently allotted the initial approval and funding for the play without knowing what the show entailed.  

Sounds like a clip from the "Dukes of Hazzard."  I remember when the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" used to play at the Covina Theater on Saturdays at midnight.  People used to line up outside the theater along Badillo Ave. dressed in costumes similar to the actors.  I once walked into the theater during the show and saw the audience singing along and holding up lighters.  Quite a sight to behold.

The 2011 Autumnal Equinox is this Friday, September 23rd at 5:05 AM EDT.  The days will be approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.  Of course as it continues into fall, and then winter, the days get shorter and the nights longer. 

While its supposed to get hot again this week, I can already feel a touch of fall coolness in the air and see the sun setting earlier in evenings.  Yesterday in the park, I could see several trees with their leaves turning a golden yellow and falling to the ground.  And so the wheel of life continues to turn. 

My friend Jon Robinson posted this drawing on facebook this morning.  He told me he drew this back in 1980, inspired by a painting of a monk his grandmother owned.  He wants to update this with him looking inward and meditating. 

What talent!!!  I can't even draw a good stick man!!!

I bought a Pagan Pride magnet for my cruiser. It says practice diversity. Now you may wonder what an avowed atheist is doing at a pagan pride event. Its a pretty diverse group and, while I don't believe in their god/goddesses either, their diversity would hopefully accept a skeptic like me. I would be comfortable at a gay pride event even though I'm not gay either.

Hopefully it won't be stolen off my car and I won't get the finger from those who may hold different views.  We'll see.
