As the holiday season grows into full bloom, it's always nice to see true acts of Christian love on display. You'll recall that the Christian "book" says to "love god, and love one another."
Apparently that's not the case at the Belmont University in Nashville, Tn. You see the university laid off their female soccer coach, Lisa Howe, with just weeks to go until Christmas with a baby on the way. The reason; the baby will be born to Lisa's same-sex partner. And ya know, Christians just can't abide by homosexuality of any kind.
It seems that Belmont University is a Christian university and, according to Howe's team members, it has a "don't ask, don't tell" policy in regards to sexual orientation. Howe, a six year employee at the school who should have known of the policy, decided to be honest with her team especially with the child on the way.
Marty Dickens, chairman of Belmont's board of trustees announced that Howe's departure was the result of the fact that "we do adhere to our values as Christ-centered, and we don't want to make apologies for that." (add southern accent)
Apparently after days of campus protests, sit-ins, and unflattering media coverage, the school president announced that the private Christian university welcomes gay and lesbian students and faculty and does not base it's hiring and firing decisions on sexual orientation.
Though there is no indication that Howe will get her job back, she has stated that, "the controversy has given her an opportunity to raise awareness about gays and lesbians, particularly those, like her, who are parents and faithful Christians."
So once again Christians are willing to sacrifice one of their own to make a point about their mythology. What ever happened to common decency and compassion for one another? Keep Christ in Christmas indeed!!!
