More American soldiers, both active duty men and women and veterans, died at their own hand than died in combat in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2010, 468 soldiers died in combat, while 468 committed suicide. In 2009, 381 soldiers committed suicide, once again exceeding the number killed in combat.
