Karen Goucher, aka "the Queens girl", finished the New York City Marathon on Sunday in third place. Goucher is the first American female to finish in the top three in 14 years. Goucher also had the fastest American female time ever of 2:25.53. Goucher finished behind two-time winner, Paula Radcliffe of Britain, and Ludmila Patrov of Russia.
For Kara Goucher the NY City Marathon has more significance because she lived in Queens, N.Y. until she was four years old and her father was killed in a traffic accident on Harlem River Drive.
Kara ran for the University of Colorado and was the NCAA outdoor champion in the 3000and 5000 meters, and the NCAA Cross Country Champion. She graduated in 2001.
Kara ran in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and finished 10th in the 10000 meters and 9th in the 5000 meters. Oh, did I mention that she grew up in my place of birth, Duluth, Minn? She is married to another American runner, Adam Goucher, and they live in the "city of bridges", Portland, Or.
