Americans United for Separation of Church and State filed a lawsuit against the State of South Carolina over the issuing of this license plate. It seems that South Carolina did not offer a similar license plate for Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic, or Pagan faiths.
When asked about issuing the license plates to other faiths, State Rep Bill Sandifer replied, "Absolutely and positively no".
U.S. District Court Judge Cameron McGowan issued a preliminary injunction forbidding the State of South Carolina from issuing or manufacturing the license plates. Judge McGowan also ordered the State to inform people who requested the plates that they will not be available and to remove information about the license plates from the State web site.
