D-Day Remembered


Sixty-four years ago today, June 6, 1944, allied forces invaded Normandy, France, in a World War II battle known today as D-Day. Approximately 130,000 troops were landed on the the beaches utilizing over 3,000 landing craft, 5,000 naval ships, and 2,500 assorted other ships. More than 197,00 naval personnel were used in all. Over 13,000 aircraft were used to support the landings. The attacks were made across the English Channel onto five sections of the north coast of France. The five sections of beach were code-named Gold, Juno, Omaha, Sword, and Utah.

Over 425,000 troops from both sides were either killed, wounded, or missing after the attack. The landings led to the surrender of the German forces in May of 1945.

Over 79 million people lost their lives in World War II, the majority of them civilians. The cost of the war is said to be one trillion dollars in 1944 dollars, making it the most costly war ever in capital and lives.
