I wonder –

Does one need to be sad to write poetry?
Does one need to have, or have had,
a broken heart to put his pen to paper?
Does one have to have, or have had, the lose
of a loved one to memorialize his reflections?
Does one have to be, or have been, the victim
of some brutal assault to share his despair?

I think -

Life’s many pin pricks and bee stings can, and do,
stimulate the raw human emotions each of us possesses.
Life’s slashes and gouges of our psyche cause the flow
of one’s blood, the very ink, that commemorate our thoughts.
The dread and foreboding that result from many of life’s darker
episodes stretch and test one’s inner strength and encourage
the creation of the words that spring from one’s recovery and renewal.
