In Memoria
A dear
friend passed but a week ago.
Apparently no
one really noticed and not
many seemed to
care. There’ll be no funeral,
no emotional memorial service, to mark the
passing
of his life. No one will form up a
processional to the grave site, and few, if any
will toss flowers on the casket. Some may
not
have noticed at all.
If I’m
honest, I have to admit he was a bit
of a pest at
times. He insisted on strict rules
and procedures,
often causing me heart burn
over the
smallest aspect. Many a man was
hampered by
his insistence in fair play and
equality, but
he always seemed to have
the best
interests of others in mind. I slaved
over him in
a career spanning some 30 years.
Taken from
us in a blast in a parking garage
in Dallas,
Texas, a bomb, attached to a drone,
cut him down
in the prime of his life. Oh,
some will
say he got what he deserved after
hatred reared its ugly head and cost the lives
of five
police officers. No need for charges
to be brought
or a costly trial. “String ‘em up”
echoed
through the night, an eerie blast from
our not so
distant past.
So farewell
old friend. I fear for our future.
