Our local sports teams really took it on chin over the weekend. The Angels were the biggest disappointment losing three straight to the wild card Kansas City Royals. They lost the first two games in extra innings and the third game in the first inning. The Angels couldn't hit the ball to save their lives. I'll be surprised if Mike Scioscia is back as manager next year, which is fine with me as I've long thought he wasn't good at managing his pitching staff.
The Dodgers proved to be heart breakers as well, when Clayton Kershaw gave up a six runs on six hits in the seventh inning of game one of the playoffs with the dreaded St. Louis Cardinals. Matt Carpenter was the Dodger killer with a 3-run double with the bases loaded. Dodger manager Don Mattingly screwed up by not taking Kershaw out after the first three hitters reached base and then let Kershaw talk him into letting him stay against Carpenter when Mattingly came to the mound.
Game two was decided when Matt Kemp hit a towering drive into the left field seats for a Dodger victory. The two teams continue their series tonight in St. Louis.
The UCLA Bruins lost to Utah 30-28 after missing two field goal attempts with time running out from 55 and 50 yards.
But the real heart breaker was when USC lost their game with Arizona State on a 46-yard "hail mary" pass into the end zone for a touchdown with no time left on the clock. To be fair, it was a total team loss as the USC defense couldn't stop ASU, who scored three touchdowns in the last four minutes, and the offense couldn't kill the clock with just over a minute to play and first and ten.
Hockey season starts Wednesday.
