Ten facts about being homeless in the US 


1.  Over a half a million people are homeless.

2.  One quarter of the homeless are children.

3.  Over 57,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. Nearly 5,000 are women.

4.  Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness in women.

5.  Many people are homeless because they can't afford rent. 

6.  There are fewer places for the poor to rent than ever before.

7.  In the last few years millions of people have lost their homes.

8.  The government doesn't help as much as you would think.

9.  One in five homeless people suffer from untreated mental illness.

10.  Cities are increasingly making homeless a crime.

I see the homeless everyday on my bike rides.  Some live under the overpasses along the Santa Ana River, others in camps along the Santa Ana River in Riverside.  I see men and women in the park across from the Honda Center and across from Anaheim Stadium.  I see families with young children.  How sad.
