This is Ohio Republican Senator Rob Portman. We should all be so proud of him because he has had a change of heart about human rights. Yes Senator Portman held a news conference to announce that he has "had a change of heart on an issue a lot of people feel strongly about that has to do with gay couples opportunity to marry." "I've come to the conclusion that for me, personally, I think this is something that we should allow people to do, to get married, and to have the joy and stability of marriage that I've had for over 26 years." HUH What a thought!!!
Why the sudden change in the man who once voted for the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996? A man who only nine months ago said businesses should be able to fire an employee for being gay? The staunch Republican who has gone on record time and time again against same-sex marriage? Well the last sentence in his statement to CNN tells the story. That last sentence says, "That I want all of my children to have, including our son, who is gay,"
Ah ha!!! His son has come out of the closet!! I'm happy that the good senator embraced his son when he came out, rather than throw him out of the family as we hear about time and time again. It's too bad he couldn't embrace the whole "equal rights for one and all" idea before it became a selfish issue.
But what about the politics involved?? Well it would seem that Senator Portman has known about his son for over two years but couldn't make this statement to the world until he was no longer a front runner for the Vice President position with Mitt Romney in the last election. It would also seem that he knew his son was gay when he went on record opposing the "Employee Non-discrimination Act" defending an employer's right to fire someone because they are gay!!! Politics is all about the next election. Senator Portman could come to regret his own "coming out" statements when trying to get Republican support in a "Bible belt" state like Ohio.
Politics!!! Bah humbug!!!!
