Officer Down!!

Yesterday the Los Angeles Police Department lost one of it's own. Randal Simmons, 51 years old, a long time member of the LAPD SWAT team, was shot and killed while making an entry into a barricaded suspect's house to rescue what was believed to be injured hostages. Simmons and another officer were hit with a barrage of gunfire when they made entry into the house. A second officer was struck in the face but is expected to survive. The suspect also killed three of his relatives before being shot and killed by the LAPD.

Those of you who may not be familiar with the photo, this is the memorial in Sacramanto, California for fallen police officers. The names of all officers killed in the line of duty are inscribed on the plaques you see to the left. In the foreground is a statue of a woman holding a child with a folded American flag on the bench beside her. It's a very moving tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrafice in the line of duty. I try to stop by the memorial when I pass through Sacramento to pay my respects.
