After the Newtown school shooting, the debate raged over gun control.  The National Rifle Association suggested schools arm their teachers, custodians, and administrators.   While teachers seem to be generally against this idea, (8 out of 10 in one poll I saw) several states are passing laws that would allow school officials to carry guns on campus.

Just such a law went into effect in the state of Kansas on July 1st.  It would seem that law makers in that state didn't do their homework before passing the law (shocking I know) or they would have learned that insurance companies that cover the schools in the state have guidelines that state that any on-site armed security should be provided by uniformed, qualified law enforcement officers.  EMC Insurance out of Des Moines, which covers 85% of the schools in Kansas, has a long standing policy to deny coverage to school districts who arm their employees.  "The risk of giving guns to anyone but law enforcement in a building of children  would make a school's coverage expensive."

I'd like to think this will be the end of this idea in Kansas, but I'm sure that some whore insurance company will step up and offer insurance for the right price to school districts who think this is a good idea.  Lets hope not.
